Fly Fishing

ARGENTINA: a dream of many fishermen

Neuquén is a privileged place for flycasting."Chimehuin", "Malleo" or "Limay" - among others - ring a bell of hope in most demanding fishermen all over the world. Neuquén Province has great lakes and rivers which have proved to be excellent areas for the spawning of Salmonidae, due to an ideal combination of water quality and abundant food, set in incredibly beautiful landscapes. In Neuquén, Salmonidae reproduce naturally and in case they are sown, the same natural conditions are carefully watched and kept. Its development is astonishing as regards quantity and quality. The species found in our province are: Rainbow Trout (Oncorynchus Mikiss), Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta), Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis), Landlocked Salmon (Salmo Salar Sebago) and Perch (Percichtys spp). The two most important basins inhabited by salmonidae belong to the Limay and Neuquén rivers.

LIMAY RIVER BASIN

The Limay is a big river. Some fishermen refer to it as a "lake with current" due to its big size in a central area, near Piedra del Aguila. It starts to flow in the Lake Nahuel Huapi to the south of the province and two important rivers flow into it: Traful and Collon Cura, which are also fed by a number of rivers and streams coming from big lakes such as Huechulafquen, Traful and Aluminé. Along the mountain area that follows the basin, the environment is perfectly suitable for any of the commonest ways of fishing allowed: spinning, trolling and fly cast. The latter, being the most widely practised one and internationally considered "the way to fish trout" .

Even though large samples can be obtained almost everywhere, three exclusive sites are to be highlighted for fly-casting. These places - both historically and at present - render very big samples and happen to be the three mouths to the rivers Chimehuín, Correntoso and Limay.

The Correntoso River has a curious geographical record: it is the shortest river in the world. Situated in Villa la Angostura it joins the lakes Correntoso and Nahuel Huapi and it is famous because of the quality and quantity of trout obtained.

Farther south, the Limay River causes astonishment every year due to the samples that can be obtained there. A large number of fishermen get to the site seeking for a prize year after year.By the year 1960 the building of some important hydroelectric dams brought about enormous benefit for the ichthyc fauna of the region, as they provided a reservoir in the wild and desert landscape that the Limay River goes through on its way to the sea.

The dam Exequiel Ramos Mexía of the construction "El Chocón" stands out for being regularly visited by those who love trolling; its coasts are also attractive to fishermen who practise spinning and fly casting.  This basin holds many world records: A 16 kg Male Brown Trout in Nahuel Huapi (trolling), and 11 kg Browns males in both mouths of the Chimehuin and Correntoso River (fly casting).
